El Mexico CafeREAD THIS BEFORE GOING TO EL MEXICO CAFE. First of I want everyone to know that is a bad place to work. My sister, and friend worked at EL Mexico Cafe when it was on Harry neaar Broadway. They hire under age kids to work and they pay the employees with personal checks. We had to ask and ask about getting a paycheck stub. Finally after calling the Department of labor we got a paycheck stub. Then at the end of the year we tried to do taxes but they never got anything back. Later we found out that they were taking taxes out but never turned it into the state. I worked there for about 6 months and there were alot of people complaining about the food. Several people got sick from eating the food. They buy the cheapest food and it isn't alway good to buy the cheapest food. Never had gloves for us to use. When we were hired we were suppose to be just a waitress but we ended up doing everything, cashier, cook, clean, etc. all buy ourseves. The pay was only $2.13/ hour. Now that I think about it, it wasn't fare to pay $2.13/hour for doing all that work. They would have 2 employyees do it all and they owner/ & his mother just sit down and not help when there were starting to gettin busy.
Authentic Mexican Food. If you've ever eaten the everyday food in Mexico, you know it is not super hot or spicey. The hot stuff is Tex-Mex. It's OK, but I prefer authentic Mexican food. El Mexico is an unpretentious purveyor of genuine Mexican food. (The only deviation would be the use of ground beef in some entrees.) The decor is "functional Mexico". The service is good. The prices are quite reasonable. Perhaps the best recommendation is the number of Mexican people that are eating there. My only warning is to be sure your chips are fresh. Once in a while, I've received stale chips. I pointed it out to the server and was immediately and cheerfully given a fresh batch.
